Pain ManagmentCervical Nerve BlocksChronic neck pain represents about 30% of chronic pain conditions with a staggering impact on the society and an estimated annual cost of about US$ 90 billion split between treatment and work losses1. At some point in a lifetime, 26 to 71% of the general population will experience neck pain2,3. Such figures reflect the importance of recognition and prompt treatment of conditions leading to chronic neck pain. Whereas varied treatment modalities are available for neck pain4, this review will focus on minimally invasive interventional approaches.Trigger Point Injections:Myofascial pain can occur spontaneously, following injury and in conjunction with a number of chronic neck and arm painful conditions5,6. Trigger point injections with lidocaine were superior to dry needling as far as improvement in pain at one day and two weeks, partly because dry needling caused post-injection soreness of significantly greater intensity and longer duration than those treated with lidocaine injection. Eliciting a local twitch response upon needle entry into the muscle was essential for pain relief7. Trigger point injections with lidocaine and neck stretches were found to be superior to neck stretches alone, although lidocaine and stretches were not superior to ultrasound and stretches8. Interestingly, even though botulinum toxin injections were found to be effective in relieving myofascial neck pain and cervicogenic headache in small pilot studies9-11, larger well controlled studies failed to show significant benefit of botulinum toxin over saline12-14.Facet Injections: Cervical facet joint has been shown to be the most commonly involved structure following neck injury especially in whiplash accidents15-17. This injury represents one of the major causes of neck pain with an estimated incidence of 4 per 1000 population18 and estimated 42% of whiplash injuries become chronic with pain persisting in about 10% of the cases. Generally, symptoms of cervical facet syndrome include neck pains, headaches, shoulder, suprascapular and scapular pain, upper arm pain while signs include decreased range of motion of the neck, pain on dorsiflexion, decrease discomfort with forward flexion and tenderness over the affected joints.To schedule an appointment call 301-718-1082

Hair tends to become dry, dull and brittle if it is soaked and dried too often. • If you’re a fish and like to spend the Summer in the pool, try spritzing on some leave-in conditioner under your swim cap to help ward off any damage from the chlorine and/or salt water and remember to wash with Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner after you get out to rehydrate. • Make natural bun hairstyles or a slick ponytail during the summer to keep you cool. Rubbing this into your legs in a gentle upward motion will have dual effects of exfoliating dry skin and oil massaging your legs as well. • Apply body oil or other light oils to heels and rough areas of feet at night, wrap in cotton gauze and leave it on overnight for soft and SEXY feet. **If your toenails have turned yellow, now would be good time to soak them in a basin with some mild bleach to whiten**Summer Make-up Tips• Take on summer with a fresh face forward - less is best! Trying to enhance your natural look with minimal embellishment will work best under the unforgiving sun.• Accentuate your glowing skin by brushing on a light shimmering powder instead of a heavy foundation. You don’t want to appear like you are melting under the blazing sun!• Invest in a great face bronzer. This is a great way to give yourself a pretty glow. CHANGES IN THE FEDERAL ESTATE TAX LAWSAND THE AFFECT IT COULD HAVE ON YOUNicole Livingston, AttorneySINCLAIRPROSSER LAW, LLCThe mere word “change” causes many of us to become immobilized. As we anticipate (tick, tick, tick) the final word on how the federal estate tax laws will be changing, it is easy to get distracted and overwhelmed with the waiting. Let’s take a look at the current estate planning circumstances and consider what the proposed changes could have on you. Current Tax Law SituationBack in George W. Bush’s first months in office, Congress passed “the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001,” or “EGTRRA.” Among other things, that law made significant changes to the federal estate tax system. It gradually increased the amount that Americans could pass exempt from federal estate tax from $1 million in 2002, to $2 million in 2008, and to $3.5 million in 2009. EGTRRA provides that in 2010 the federal estate tax is repealed for one year. What this means is those that pass away in 2010 will not have to pay any federal estate taxes. However, due to budgetary constraints, Congress had the law “sunset” or go away at the end of 2010. Thus, in 2011 and thereafter the federal estate tax returns with a $1 million applicable exclusion. Many expect Congress to act to prevent the repeal of the federal estate tax. In fact, on December 3rd, the House voted to make both the federal estate tax and 2009’s $3.5 million exclusion permanent. However, the close House vote indicates that passage is not assured in the Senate, which requires 60% approval to avoid a filibuster. There are several other measures currently before Congress which would prevent the repeal of the federal estate tax. These bills would set the exclusion amount permanently between $2 million and $5 million per person. Others expect that Congress will not be able to agree on a permanent solution but will do a one-year extension of the current $3.5 million exclusion to prevent the repeal in 2010. If Congress does a one-year extension, then the exclusion will drop to $1 million in 2011, unless Congress acts again before then. We’ll know by year-end, right?Not much is certain. Even if Congress fails to act before the end of 2009, it can still change the law and have the change apply retroactively to Jan. 1st (at least if it acts within 9 months). As a result, we may not know if there is a federal estate tax until well into 2010!So, how do we plan in the midst of this uncertainty?• First, do an estate plan. It has often been said that if you fail to plan, you might just as well plan to fail. Remember to keep your plan updated. A qualified estate planning attorney will keep you informed of changes in the law that would affect your estate plan. • Second, it’s not just about the taxes! Federal estate taxes currently affect less than one percent of people. The most important reasons to plan are captured in the photos displayed around your home: your family.• Third, don’t procrastinate. Estate tax uncertainty is not a good excuse for not creating your estate plan. Without a current estate plan, you are jeopardizing the futures of those most important to you. Do you really want confusion and turmoil to be your legacy? How would your assets be managed? Who would care for minor children? • Fourth, a Trust-based estate plan is a way to protect your privacy, during your life as well as when you’re gone. • Fifth, a good estate plan not only protects those around you after your death, it protects you and your family in the event of your incapacity. The bottom line is impending change in the federal estate tax is not an excuse to procrastinate on something as important as creating an estate plan. The impact of no planning will be far more devastating to your family and loved ones than change in the federal estate tax. A qualified estate planning attorney can help you create a comprehensive estate plan and will keep you informed of any changes in the law that would impact your situation.

Lemon Caper Cutlets Makes 2 servings Ingredients: 1 package of Lightlife Smart Cutlets Original 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 2-3 ounce bottle of capers 1/3 cup of lemon juice 3/4 cup dry white wine 1/2 cup vegetable broth (with salt) 3 tablespoons minced garlic 1 egg (lightly beaten) 3 tablespoons flour 1/3 cup panko bread crumbs Directions: Put broth, lemon juice, capers, wine and garlic in a medium sauce pan over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes. In the meantime, heat olive oil in large saute pan over medium heat. Lightly cover each cutlet with flour, and then dip both sides in a thin layer of egg and coat with bread crumbs. When oil is hot, add cutlets. After two minutes flip them and cook other side for another two minutes (or until golden brown). When cutlets are ready pour sauce over them and serve.

Patriots Youth Technology TrainingOur end of the year monthly meeting was hosted by Bowie State College and BDPA (formerly known as Black Data Processing Associates). Our students enjoyed walking on the campus and some of our parents had flash backs when they were in college. The opening remarks for the conference were rendered by Dr. Daryl Stone, Assistant Professor, Computer Science at Bowie State. Then Susan Stewart gave a presentation about CISCO. Mr. Jucain Butler and some of our members set up Lego and Flight Simulation exhibits.We also had a chance to see the Tech Challenge Robot presented by Denise Lewis from US FIRST. Mr. Ernest Moore of the Blacks in Government Chapter from the Census Bureau joined us as we built a partnership in preparing students for jobs in the federal government. Special thanks goes to Perry Carter, President of The Washington, DC BDPA Chapter and Bowie State College for partnering with us for our final meeting for the 2010-2011 year. Our students got a chance to watch BDPA High School Computer Competition and JEF Regional IT Showcase. Parents attended the advance planning briefing to industry workshops which gave them an overview on the job market for the future and information on how to help prepare their children for future jobs in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Feature Articles Addressing Your Back PainBy Tanja AndersonSome professionals consider the origin of back pain to be a “disuse syndrome,” referring to our predominantly sedentary lifestyle. Lack of physical activity and our poor ergonomics cause our core muscles to weaken. Our spine then becomes unstable causing the “working” muscles to tense up and eventually develop knots. All muscles of our body are interconnected by fascia - a thin and strong connective tissue that webs around and in between the muscles and keeps them in place. Changes in one muscle spread throughout the fascia system to other muscles causing misalignment and structural changes in our back. No matter what the cause of your back pain is (degenerative, disc protrusion, scoliosis or injury) it ultimately affects your soft tissues: muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. No matter what other methods you are using to resolve your back pain (surgery, PT, TENS, ultrasound, etc.) your affected soft tissue has to be addressed by a body worker. A holistic body worker (massage therapist) has an array of techniques available to offer to you. Each of these methods can be used singly or in combination with others during each given session.Myofascial release is an amazingly effective, pain-free technique of stretching your tight fascia and relaxing your stiff muscles.
