SmartLipo™ Offers New Options for Body Contouring
By James R. Benjamin, M.D.
The essence of beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This remains an adage that does not, and should not, change. In the 30 years that I have been in private practice, the art and science of cosmetic medicine has been advanced in ways that make beauty more perceptible to even more eyes. The tools to accomplish this end are extensively researched, and advances are myriad. SmartLipo™ is one of these new advanced technical marvels. Cynosure, a premier laser manufacturer, introduced it with FDA approval in November 2006. I had the privilege of introducing SmartLipo™ to plastic surgeons in the Delaware/Maryland/Virginia corridor in April 2007, and I still teach plastic surgeons in the Delmarva region how to use the laser when they purchase a SmartLipo™ laser system from Cynosure.

Treating Spider Veins: The Art of Sclerotherapy
By Mary Guise, R.N. and Jonathan Calure, M.D.
Do you suffer from discomfort, pain, or poor self-image related to spider veins? Whether seeking relief from pain or a better cosmetic appearance for your legs, an array of minimally invasive treatment options is now available. Traditionally, vein disease has been mischaracterized as solely cosmetic and few treatment options other than compression stockings or stripping surgery were offered. We now have a more thorough understanding of vein disease, its presentation, and treatment.
Sclerotherapy is the injection of a medication into the spider veins that acts to scar the vessel closed. The blood then re-routes into healthier vessels to restore the correct flow pattern.
